- Reduced or no crew costs
- Reduced or no bunker cost
- Reduced P&I premiums
- Reduced Hull & Machinery premiums
- More+++ benefits
Lay-Up Options
The extent to which a vessel will be laid-up depends on several factors, including anticipated lay-up period duration; the need to reduce running costs; time required for reactivation; and the age and value of the ship.
Transk01 Maritime Services offers two different options of lay-up for your consideration:
Ships that are laid up “hot” will have a small crew onboard and will have the minimum of machinery operating. A hot lay-up is used to deactivate a vessel for a limited number of weeks. Reactivating a ship from a hot lay-up can be comparatively quick.
There are a number of possible advantages to the hot lay-up method compared to the more involved cold lay-up. As the description suggests, the hot lay-up is achieved by having a small crew onboard the vessel, periodically carrying out maintenance regimes, with the minimum of machinery running. This ensures that the machinery, electrical and electronic systems are kept within tolerable temperature and humidity conditions by a crew that is familiar with the vessel.
The advantages of this approach are that the vessel can be easily laid up and an experienced crew can be retained. With the crew still onboard, weather, mooring, flooding, security, fire and other safety concerns can be allayed. In addition, onboard inspections can be easily achieved as access is good, lighting is operational and it is relatively easy to find a berth for a short-term lay-up. Finally, the vessel can be reactivated within a very short time.
A cold lay-up will require a vessel being moved to a secure location and shutting down all systems. All machinery and systems onboard must be secured, and a specialised lay-up crew should be employed. Cold lay-ups can save more money, but the vessel is out of service for at least a few months. Reactivation, in this case, could take weeks.
The main advantage of a cold lay-up is that it gives the maximum cost saving over a long period of time. There can be some significant disadvantages, however, such as machinery degradation, so an owner should consider this option carefully before finally deciding to proceed. Modern vessels have a significant amount of sophisticated computer and electronic equipment onboard, and the industry has no real experience of how these complex systems will start up and reboot after an extended period of inactivity.
This means often that a vessel will be required to dry-dock before starting to trade again. Reactivation can be problematic and needs careful supervision. If there is a problem, this could be difficult if the ship is in a remote location with no power, making company inspections more difficult. Dealing with any technical issues caused by long-term lay-up can often take months or years to sort out.
Putting a vessel into cold lay-up will substantially reduce an owner’s overheads. However, if the correct procedures are not followed, it can end up causing serious and long-term damage to machinery and systems, with very significant cost and operational implications.
